Poitou-Charentes - Historic Region of France

Poitou-Charentes is a former region of France. Centrally located on the western seaboard of France, the Bay of Biscay, this is a picturesque coastline, which includes the medieval port of La Rochelle, that contrasts with the rolling countryside dotted with numerous fine Romanesque churches that served Pilgrims on their route to northwest Spain.  The region included the departments of Charente, Charente-Maritime, Deux-Sèvres and Vienne. With the re-ordering of the administrative regions at the end of 2015, from 2016 Poitou-Charentes was combined with Aquitaine and Limousin to form the region now known as Nouvelle-Aquitaine.
